NYSE/FINANCIAL DISTRICT STREETSCAPES + SECURITY New York, New York

Rogers Marvel Architects is currently working with the New York City Department of City Planning and the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation to design security and streetscape enhancements for the New York Financial District, specifically including the New York Stock Exchange.

RMA’s approach balances the issues and contradictions of enabling a vibrant streetscape while installing cutting-edge security in the densest urban conditions of New York.  Through careful examination and evaluation of the problem and a thorough coordination with multiple stakeholders and city agencies, a comprehensive strategy knits together the cultural, historical and financial landmarks with the security plan.

Based on our work at Battery Park City, the New York City Department of City

Planning invited us to join the technical team already in place and to infuse it with attention to civic space design.
Between July 2003 and September 2004 - just over a year - the first phase of the new security architecture was designed and built.

Custom-designed components of the comprehensive design for the district include a fountain in front of the Stock Exchange, “NOGO” sculptural barriers, and a shallow-foundation turntable barrier.  These elements service street-level amenities such as sidewalk cafes while also functioning as high-tech security devices.

Through innovative planning and design strategies, RMA utilized security programming to build public amenities that enhance the public space around one of America’s most iconic buildings.
